Scripture Reading: Luke 24:44-48
Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. John 5:39
This was the advice Jesus gave to His critics who refused to recognize Him as the Messiah and accept Him as the Son of God. There is only one Book in the world which contains the revelation of the Lord Jesus, and therefore, no one can know Christ apart from the Word of God. To be saved, one must believe what the Bible says about Jesus (1 John 5:10-11). The "new birth" is the result of receiving God's Word concerning the Son of God. It is the "seed" which alone can produce eternal life by the power of the Holy Spirit (1 Pet. 1:23).
And for the believer the "Word of God" becomes the necessary food for proper spiritual growth and development. We are admonished to "grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ" (2 Peter 3:18). This knowledge is found only in His Word, therefore, we must "feed" upon it. It is not enough to just read passage as a custom or habit, but Jesus said "Search" the Scriptures. Paul says in 2 Timothy 2:15, "Study to show thyself approved." The virility of your spiritual life is in direct proportion to the time you spend prayerfully in this Book. Take a few minutes extra today and see the difference. Let nothing keep you from it.
An Irishman was once reading the Bible, when the priest entered and remonstrated with him for so doing. But Pat replied, "It says, 'search the Scriptures,' your reverence, and when you came in I was just reading, 'Ye shall read it to your children,' and the priests have no children. How do you account for that?"
Others cannot "search" the Scriptures for you. The fruit you pick yourself is always the sweetest. (M.R.D.)
I could not get along without my Bible,
Its words are life and spirit to my soul,
Revealing all there is for me in Jesus,
Renewing, cleansing, burning, making whole.
