THE PRAYER OF A CHILD

Scripture Reading: 1 Samuel 3:1-18

And the child Samuel ministered unto the LORD. 1 Samuel 3:1

Jesus said concerning children, "Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones." God loves to use little children in the carrying out of His program, and many are the examples in Scripture where children like Samuel "ministered unto the Lord." Isaac Watts, the hymn writer, was converted at the age of nine years, Jonathan Edwards at the age of seven, Henry Ward Beecher at five, Richard Baxter at six; and what lessons these little ones teach us. In a certain hospital a little girl of four was to undergo a serious operation. After placing her on the table the attendant began to prepare her for the anesthetic. Bewildered, the little one said, "What are you going to do with me?" The kind doctor replied, "Before we can make you well, we must put you to sleep." And the little girl replied, "Then wait just a moment. If I am going to sleep, I must say my prayers first." She closed her little eyes and repeated the child's prayer: "Now I lay me down to sleep," and then said, "I am ready now." Afterward the surgeon testified that he himself prayed for the first time in thirty years, and was converted. Yes, "a little child shall lead them."

A little boy, whose father was publisher of the "Daily Press," was studying his Sunday school lesson and came across the verse, "He sought to see Jesus...and could not for the press" (Luke 19:3). "Oh, Dad," he cried, "is that why you cannot accept Jesus; because of your press?" The simple words struck home and brought conviction. How we ought to win the children for Christ for they are often His best witnesses. D.L. Moody returning from a meeting reported "two and a half" conversions. "Two adults and a child?" asked his friend; and Moody replied, "No! Two children and an adult. The children gave their whole lives — the adult had only half his life to give." Take good care of the lambs and there will be no trouble with the sheep. (M.R.D.)

How often it is true,

Men marvel at their simple faith

And trust their Saviour too!
